Opti-Grab
at the Mercury Lounge, August 27, 2002
And you thought Run-DMC was the only groundbreaking hip-hop trio
to come out of New York? Oh dear. It's time to let Opti-Grab raise a little
hell in this city. I walked into the Mercury Lounge to a room full of party
peeps. Opti-Grab – two fellas and a honey – were rapping white-ghetto-glam
over funky beats and dancing like extras in a Biggie Smalls video. Think
the Moldy Peaches meet Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. One fella
wore a too-small black fedora with a feather and fingerless leather gloves
and the other fella, the DJ, was in full Boy Scout garb. The Boy Scout was
hitting glass-shattering high notes and making the crowd squeal. The only
things he was missing were some Jheri curls and a sparkly glove on his hand.
The honey had a smoky voice, almost exactly like Gabby Glaser of Luscious
Jackson. Opti-Grab's synchronized dance routines were pure gems, and their
tongue-in-cheek humor incited riotous laughter and hooting from the crowd.
Opti-Grab is so much fun, I'm going to have them play at both my birthday
party and my funeral... |
